MacLean Aims to Build on Last Season’s Success
Kyle MacLean is determined to carry last season’s momentum into New York Islanders Training Camp. After making the jump from the AHL to the NHL, he’s balancing his role as a mentor to younger players while continuing to learn from veterans on the team.
“The younger guys from Bridgeport, I’m here to help, but I’m still learning from the older guys,” MacLean said.
Rising Through the Ranks
MacLean spent four seasons in Bridgeport before earning his spot with the Islanders last season. His two-way play and grit caught Head Coach Patrick Roy’s attention.
“I love his 200-foot game,” Roy said. “He’s got the speed, grit, and defensive responsibility we need.”
Preseason Performance
With 32 NHL games and playoff experience under his belt, MacLean entered camp ready to build on his progress. He impressed in a preseason win against the New Jersey Devils, logging nearly 16 minutes of ice time and going 80% in the face-off circle.
“Faceoffs are a big part of my game,” MacLean said. “I’ve been working on them and getting tips from veteran teammates.”
Physicality and Improvement
In his second preseason game, MacLean brought physicality, recording three hits and two takeaways. Each year, he feels more comfortable and confident in his abilities.
Focus on Progress
Coach Roy has faith in MacLean but stresses the need for continued hard work.
“He’s smart, and the experience will help him, but he needs to keep pushing,” Roy said.
MacLean remains focused on showing well in camp and improving his game. “I got a taste of the NHL last year, but now I need to keep getting better,” he said.
